Please watch this. It begins with Dr. Peter Breggin, psychiatrist, speaking about how he stopped the resurgence of shock treatment in 1972, then it goes on to comments from Richard Gottlieb, an empathic therapist. The main portion of this 20-minute video is of Dr. Bert Karon, a professor of psychology at U Michigan talking about his work in schizophrenia.
Cogently and concisely, he explains that schizophrenia is a state of constant terror caused by trauma that would make anybody crazy. Dr. Karon cures–yes, helps people completely heal–by listening and learning what the diagnosed person’s symbolic utterances mean. It is not about neurology or pharmacology; it is about one human being actually listening to another human being. Please watch the whole tape.
